It’s really out of my hands now, isn’t it? 13 years in the making, here we go!

University Hall named in 1823 (originally named the College Edifice) was the first Rhode Island College (now Brown University) building built on the East Side of Providence. The building was actually built in three stages due to a number of factors at the time. The first stage consisted of the construction of the first and second stories and was completed in 1771. In December 1776 the building was appropriated by the American Army to use as a barracks during the Revolutionary War. From 1780 to 1782, University Hall was used as a hospital for French troops. The structure sustained considerable damage during the War but was repaired. The third story was completed in 1785 and the fourth floor was completed in 1788. Since University Hall was the first and only University building for the first 50 years of Brown, it served as a place for living, studying, eating, and worshipping. University Hall currently serves as the chief administrative building.
