BURRILLVILLE, R.I.—Rhode Island is preserving 105 acres of mature forestland in the northwestern corner of the state.

The state announced Wednesday that it would add the property to the adjacent 1,748-acre Black Hut Management Area in Burrillville. The property contains an old quarry, forests, wetlands and large rock outcroppings.

Janet Coit, director of the state’s Department of Environmental Management, says the acquisition will protect an important wildlife habitat from development while providing the public with new recreational opportunities.

The state plans to upgrade the site’s existing walking trails and add a parking lot.

The state paid $344,000 for the property. Most of the money came from a federal Wildlife Restoration Grant.
